“Hereby perceive we the love of God, because He laid down His life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.” ~ I John 3:16
Selfishness is something we all have to overcome if we want to walk in the abundant life Jesus has provided for us. We were inherently born with a certain amount of selfishness. At a very young age we learned the word “mine”. The unfortunate thing is, some never overcome it all their days. As believers we are called to overcome selfishness. If you are like me you’re still a work in progress.
When God called Abraham in Genesis chapter 12 He said to him, “And I will bless thee, and make thy name great: and thou shalt be a blessing.” The reason God called Abraham was so he could be a blessing. If we’re going to walk in the blessing of Abraham we’ll have to also walk in the calling of Abraham to be a blessing.
Like Abraham we need to develop a blessing mind-set. Instead of thinking of how can I be blessed today, we need to start thinking how can I be a blessing today. When you develop this kind of mind-set you are on your way to being extremely blessed. It will take some time to totally overcome selfishness, but it will be worth your every effort.
