Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin. ~ I Peter 4:1 ~
Have you ever heard someone who is going through some kind of tragedy or sickness say, “I’m just suffering for Jesus” ? Well the truth is, He doesn’t need your suffering. At least not like that. This verse in I Peter says that He suffered for us. If He suffered for us then there is no need for us to suffer in the way He did for us. So, how did Jesus suffer for us? He bore our sin, sickness, poverty, spiritual death, lack of peace, and all the other evil that came upon us because of the fall of man. If He didn’t bear all these things for us then there is absolutely no way we’ll ever be free from them in this life, or in the life to come. So then, just what are we to suffer? Because this verse does say that we’re to arm ourselves with the same mind of suffering in the flesh that Christ had. As believers in Jesus there are two main areas that we will have to suffer in.
One, we’re to suffer by denying our flesh. If you’ve ever said no to your flesh then you know the pressure you have to go through to make it obey. But the truth is, that’s part of the process of ceasing from sin. Two, we’ll have to suffer persecution if we’re going to live godly in Christ Jesus. Perhaps you’ve already found this out. You’ll be persecuted for what you believe, especially if you’re a strong Word believer. These are two areas that we’ll have to suffer in. However, compared to what Jesus suffered for us, it’s just small potatoes. Remember, we don’t have to put up with anything that Jesus suffered on our behalf. He did that so we’d be free from it!
